Missouri residents with a state medical card have been allowed to possess cannabis since legislation was passed in 2018. Since legalization is still fairly new, and the specific laws governing use and possession of aren’t common knowledge, card holders may find themselves in the company of those who are worried about getting into trouble by being around someone with marijuana.

Remember, possession of cannabis in Missouri is perfectly legal for those with a valid medical card. Once you have your card, you should know that being in possession of cannabis is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s within the confines of the law, and you don’t need to hide it. That being said, if you are with a person who does not have a medical card, here are some tips to set your companions at ease and avoid getting them into any legal trouble:

Have your medical card on you at all times.

Since marijuana possession and use are illegal in Missouri for those who don’t have a card, you may find yourself having to prove that you are operating within the bounds of the law. It’s always a good idea to have your card on you, just in case. Don’t leave home without it.

Don’t have more than you’re allowed.

Missouri state law allows patients to possess up to eight ounces, or half a pound. You can only purchase four ounces per month, but the law allows you to carry a sixty day supply. If you have a marijuana cultivation card, you can carry up to twelve ounces. Make sure you’re not carrying more than you’re allowed, especially if you’re out in public with someone else. Most likely, if you were caught with more than the legal limit, you would be the person facing legal trouble, but an officer might assume the additional cannabis is for your companion.

Don’t leave someone else holding the bag.

Remember, as a medical card holder, YOU are allowed to possess medical marijuana. If you have cannabis in your bag, that bag should be with you at all times. Don’t put a friend in danger by asking them to hold it while you run to the restroom or on some other errand. And don’t ask a friend to keep your stash in their bag. You never know what’s going to happen, and you don’t want to put them in a sticky situation.

Be transparent with the police.

If you DO encounter a legal problem, show the officer your card and inform them that the marijuana is your own personal supply for medicinal use. The law is on your side in this situation, and there is nothing to worry about. Be straightforward with the police officer, know your rights, and you should have nothing to worry about.

*Editor’s Note: Products purchased from a dispensary must be kept in or with their original packaging from a Missouri dispensary. It is technically illegal to possess marijuana products purchased in another state.
