How to for Carve your Weed-Themed Pumpkin

1. Prepare your Pumpkin:

Cut a hole in the top of your pumpkin to make a lid. Remember to angle the knife inwards so your lid sits on top and doesn’t fall through!

Scoop out the seeds and strings with a spoon. On the side you plan to carve, scrape some of the flesh from the inside wall so it’s about an inch thick — this will make carving easier!

2. Prepare your Template:

Print your template and trim off any excess paper.

Use tape or push pins to attach your template to your pumpkin. If your pumpkin is lumpy, try wetting it with a damp towel dipped in water or vegetable oil. If the paper is bunching, you can also make small cuts so that it lies flat.

3. Transfer your Template:

Transfer the template to your pumpkin by poking holes through the pattern with a pumpkin poker, nail, or push pin to create guiding lines. Keep the holes close together so you can clearly see your carving guide.

This is one of the most tedious steps, but also one of the most important! We like to light a joint and put the pumpkin in our lap to get it done — check out the list above for product recommendation from our budtenders!

When you’re finished, remove the paper from your pumpkin. If you’re having trouble seeing the holes, rub some flour over the holes to make them easier to find.

4. Prepare to Carve:

Push your pumpkin poker or nail all the way through the pumpkin at each of the areas you’ll be carving (for example: eyes, mouth, etc). We like to do this at all the corners of our design to make things easier as we go.

This will also help take the pressure off your pumpkin so that it doesn’t break as you get more and more of the pumpkin carved.

5. Carve your Pumpkin

Using one of your small holes from step 4 as a staring point, cut into the design with your serrated knife or pumpkin saw. Start in the center and work your way out to avoid putting too much pressure the pumpkin wall.

Use a sawing motion with light pressure to cut out your design, taking your time and letting the knife itself do the work — don’t try to force the saw with pressure!

When cutting curves, just slightly turn the knife as you go. When cutting sharp corners, remove and re-insert the knife at an angle.

When you’re finished, remove the pieces by pushing them out from the inside. Larger pieces may need to be cut into smaller bits and removed in sections.

6. Light it up!

Add a battery-operated candle to show off your design! If you want to use a real candle, put a piece of tin foil in the bottom of your pumpkin and place the candle on top, then cut small slits in the pumpkin’s top so that the smoke can be released without turning your masterpiece to mush.

Bonus points if you add a pumpkin-friendly smoke bomb for an extra-stoney touch!
