Missouri recreational marijuana legalization is definitely something to celebrate but weed isn’t legal quite yet. While recreational weed sales in Missouri are expected to start by February 2023, ensuring cannabis security is still only possible in the Show Me State for residents with a MO weed card.

Did you know that increased cannabis security is actually one of the leading benefits of having a Missouri medical card? There’s no reason to get in legal trouble over cannabis possession or consumption when it can easily be avoided with an MMJ card.

Want to enjoy your Missouri weed freely? Of course you do! Here we’ll explore why security increases when you have a medical card in MO (even when recreational weed is legal).

Increased Cannabis Security with Your MO Weed Card

What does a medical marijuana card do to increase security for Missouri’s cannabis consuming residents?

Quite a bit actually. Especially right now when things are kind of in limbo regarding legalization. Even though recreational weed laws passed in Missouri, it’s still going to take some time for these laws to go into effect.

Making sure you have your MO weed card (before recreational laws are officially enacted) increases legal security until recreational marijuana regulations begin. Maintaining a Missouri medical marijuana card after recreational laws start also increases security when it comes to possession limits and employee protection.

When it comes to the benefits of having a Missouri medical card, increased security is on the top of the list. Here we’ll take a deeper look.

What Does A Medical Marijuana Card Do For Missouri Possession Limits?

On December 8, 2022, adults ages 21 and over will be allowed to possess up to three ounces of marijuana in Missouri. Before rec weed was legalized, possession of three ounces could put you in jail for a year and cost up to $2,000 in fines.

Possession of larger quantities of marijuana will still be punishable per Missouri recreational marijuana regulations. This means that individuals caught with anything over 35 grams (1.2 ounces) of marijuana after recreational laws go into effect can still face felony charges, up to seven years’ incarceration, and a $10,000 maximum fine.

It’s different if you have a MO weed card, though. Medical marijuana card rules and regulations aren’t the same as recreational regulations. If you have a medical card, you can safely possess more than an ounce of weed in Missouri.

Recreational marijuana laws in Missouri don’t just increase legal possession limits for adult consumers. Under Amendment 3, the possession limits for Missouri medical marijuana patients have also increased.

Current medical marijuana rules and regulations in Missouri permit for the possession of up to four ounces a month. According to new recreational rules, residents with a MO weed card will be permitted to possess up to six ounces a month.

This means once recreational marijuana regulations in Missouri go into effect, people with their MMJ card will be able to possess twice the amount of weed as recreational consumers.

If you’re a Missouri resident that wants to possess more than three ounces of weed at a time, having your medical card is key. Under recreational marijuana regulations, Missouri medical patients can safely possess up to six ounces of weed.

Talk about increased cannabis security! When it comes to avoiding legal trouble, the benefits of having a Missouri medical card are seriously unprecedented.

Increased Employment Protection For Missouri Medical Marijuana Patients

Amendment 3 didn’t just legalize recreational cannabis use in the Show Me State. It also strengthened Missouri’s current medical marijuana program significantly.

So what does an MO weed card do for employee protection?

Missouri recreational marijuana legalization offers legal protection by prohibiting discrimination from employers against:

  • A positive drug test for marijuana or marijuana metabolites of a person who possesses a valid MO weed card (as long as the employee is not under the influence of marijuana while on the job)
  • The status of an individual as a patient or primary caregiver that has a valid card, including the individual’s legal use of marijuana products during nonworking hours when off the employer’s property

The same employment protection does not apply to Missouri recreational marijuana consumers.
