Football season is here, and few things go better with this week’s game than a big plate of Buffalo wings. There’s just something about that spicy sauce hitting your mouth like a linebacker pulverizing a quarterback that’s devastating and delightful at the same time. This season, if you’ve got your Missouri Medical Card, consider kicking your wings up a notch by infusing your sauce with cannabis.

This football season, Missouri residents have some ups and downs to look forward to. The Kansas City Chiefs are attempting to make a third consecutive Super Bowl appearance. On the NCAA landscape, Mizzou fans likely have a bumpy road ahead, currently polling fourth in the SEC. Regardless of who you root for, everyone’s a winner with the right game time snack.

Buffalo wings have become standard fare for hungry football fans. Perhaps no food is more closely associated with the game. Here’s a little history to give you something to talk about during time outs:

History of the Buffalo Wing

As with most pieces of American folklore, the facts have been disputed, but most accounts agree that the Buffalo Wing, as we know it today, was invented in Buffalo New York in 1964 at a family-owned restaurant called Anchor Bar by a woman named Teressa Bellissimo.

According to an interview in Time magazine, the bar had accidentally been sent a shipment of chicken wings they didn’t order. Rather than let them go to waste, Teressa snapped those wings in half, creating the two sizes and shapes commonly referred to as the “flat” and the “drum.” She covered them in a sauce that was her own concoction, and when celery and blue cheese were the only things available to serve on the side, they became the standard buffalo wing accompaniment. The rest is football snacking history!

How to Make THC Infused Buffalo Wings!

There are all-sorts of Buffalo wing recipes out there, but we’re choosing to pay homage to the original. Our recipe uses the classic Anchor Bar ingredients but adds a cannabis-based twist to provide gametime relief for anyone with a Missouri Medical Marijuana Card.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 36 chicken wing segments, separated into “drums” and “flats”
  • 4 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • ¾ cup flour
  • 4 oz. canna-butter (Learn how to make your own cannabutter here)
  • 4 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper
  • ⅛ tsp garlic powder
  • 12-16 oz hot sauce (NOTE: Frank’s is the brand they use in Buffalo)
  • Celery sticks
  • Blue cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, coat and toss the wings in vegetable oil.
  3. Toss the wings into the flour until they are evenly coated.
  4. Line a couple of baking pans with foil. Spread the wings out on the pans.
  5. Bake the wings for 20 minutes on one side. Flip them and bake for 20 more minutes. They should be golden brown.
  6. While the wings are baking – it’s time to make your cannabis-infused sauce. In a saucepan, combine your canna-butter, vinegar, hot sauce, cayenne powder, and garlic powder. Turn your burner to medium heat and let the sauce simmer, stirring occasionally.
  7. When the wings are done, put them into a large bowl, and pour the sauce mixture over them. Toss them until they are completely coated.
  8. Serve the wings with slices of celery sticks and small cups of blue cheese.
