As a veteran with PTSD, finding effective treatment options can be a challenge. Prescription medications often come with a host of side effects, leaving many veterans feeling discouraged and helpless. However, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that cannabis can be a valuable tool in the treatment of PTSD.

I am a veteran who has been prescribed cannabis as part of my treatment plan for PTSD. At first, I was hesitant to try it, but after researching and speaking with my doctor I decided to give it a chance. I started with a micro-dosing regimen and found that using a vape pen was highly effective in reducing my anxiety and helping me sleep better.

Cannabinoids and terpenes, the active compounds in cannabis, have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective effects, which can help alleviate symptoms of PTSD. Specifically, the terpenes Linalool, Beta-Caryophyllene, Myrcene, and Bisobolol have been beneficial in my personal experience. Additionally, there are now many different dosing methods beyond just smoking, such as edibles, lozenges, transdermal patches, and my personal favorite, tinctures.

While cannabis is not a cure for PTSD, it has been an important part of my treatment plan and has allowed me to better manage my symptoms in a way that prescription medications alone have been unable to, especially when you consider the long list of less-than-desirable side effects that often accompany the use of traditional pharmaceuticals. I was completely heartbroken when I first learned about the disproportionately high number of suicides that occur among vets, including those who are actively seeking help through traditional therapy. It’s downright infuriating when you consider that the most commonly prescribed PTSD medications list self-harm and/or suicidal thoughts or ideation as common side effects. I honestly believe that cannabis could be a safe and effective option for many of my fellow veterans struggling with PTSD and may even have the potential to save lives. Furthermore, studies have shown that cannabis can be extremely beneficial for those of us treating physical ailments, as well.

If you are considering cannabis as part of your treatment plan, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional who is knowledgeable about cannabis and its potential benefits and risks.
